Do I need any special equipment?
We recommend sturdy trail running shoes and long pants.
You will also need a compass.
You can bring your own SportIdent timing stick or use one of ours.
We also recommend you bring:
What is the format?
The race is 6 hours and it includes a Le Mans start, a flagged trail running component, the main rogaine (score-O) section, and of course, an amazing surprise or two. You may get some maps at the start - or somewhere else on the course.
Can kids compete?
You need to be 16 years of age, with orienteering experience, if you want to make a teenage team. However, we highly encourage adults to team up with youth of any age....as long as they are happy to be on the move for up to 6 hours.
I don't have a partner but I want to race. What do I do?
Email Nicki ([email protected]) and she will do her best to suggest a match-up.
What if I don't know how to use a compass or read a map?
We welcome both beginner and experienced people at Run the Wild. Find as many controls as you can in the given time period. Some are on or near trails and easily found and some are more remote and on complex features, but you get to chose your own level of adventure. Everyone gets to feel successful. This race requires average orienteering skills and if you want to brush up on those skills, check out your local orienteering club for regular events.
Who organizes Run the Wild?
Nicki Rehn, JP Buysschaert, and Jen Silverthorn. We are experienced orienteers, adventure racers and trail runners and have been designing and hosting events like this for years. This will be the 9th edition of Run the Wild. Feel free to contact Nicki at [email protected].
How far is the running?
That totally depends on how far you want to run and how efficient your route plan is. Normally, the top teams "clear the course" (i.e. find all the control flags) with about 30 km of running and bush-whacking. Other people just come out and enjoy the course at a walking and picnicking pace.
What if I get really lost?
We always provide a safety bearing to follow if you get completely lost. In addition, this map is covered by a trail system and you'll be allowed to carry a phone with a GPS app, like TrailForks, to guide you to the nearest trail if needed.
